Aditi: Hey Tom! What have you got there?

Tom: I have got a basketball ball. Do you want to play?

Aditi: Not really Tom, I have got no real interest in basketball, or sports at all.

Tom What do you like to do Aditi?

Aditi: I like reading books, watching movies and going for a walk to the park

Tom: Do you like making photos?

Aditi: Yes, I like it a lot, I specially like photographing landscapes

Tom: Me too, I am very interested in photography

Aditi: Seriously? That’s great

Tom: Guess what? I think we can go to the park for a while. There’s a basketball court there and nice places to make photos
Aditi: hey, that’s a fantastic idea!

Tom: I‘m very excited. My mother is going to take me today to buy the new Super Running shoes.

Bennet: Ow! Lucky you! These are a very expensive kind of sport shoes

Tom: Yes, I like jogging, and these shoes are the best for that! I have a new tracksuit already. I can’t wait to wear all these wonderful stuff together

Susan: I want new clothes too! I want a new skirt, very fashionable, but I failed the last English exam and my mother told me off. Now I cannot have new clothes until Summer

Bennet: That’s a pity! You must study harder Susan. I have the same problem. There’s also a T-shirt I want, but my mother doesn’t let me to buy it because it’s too expensive. It is over 30 €.

Tom: Whoa, that’s a lot of money for a T-shirt indeed!

Susan: I’m going to study harder this time.

Bennet: Hey Joyce, why are you always wearing black?

Joyce: Well, it’s my favourite colour, it suits me , I think

Susan: Yeah, you are right. What are you guys going to do on Friday after class?

Tom: No idea, we have no plans

Before reading…
Do you play any musical instrument? Which one? Why?

Today our friends are in music class. Ms Wellington is trying to introduce them to the topic, and to teach them some interesting things.

Ms W: Ok, does anybody play any instrument there?

Laura: Yes, I play the piano

Ms W: and why do you like playing the piano, Laura?

Laura: Well, at the beginning my parents just enrolled me in piano classes. Now I love piano. When I’m feeling sad or depressed, playing always cheer me up a little. Now I’m thinking of making my own band and play jazz.

Ms. W: and what kind of music do you guys like?

Joyce: I like rock music

Tom: I like hip hop

Ms. W: and what do you feel when you listen to your favourite music?

Tom:That’s very difficult to explain Ms. Wellington. But when I listen to the music I like it. I usually feel good, active. I think that nothing can stop me in that moment.

Laura: all your problems seem to disappear. You are happy.

Ms. W: That’s right my dear students. Music is part of us, part of what we are. When we are through bad times, it help us to see the brighter side of things

Terry is the caretaker of Higgins, a bull terrier dogs that appears in a lot of films and TV shows. He is commenting on Higgins’ plans for the future. 

Interviewer- So Terry, congratulations for Higgins’ last film. It was a success! What are your immediate plans for the rest of the year?

Higgins: well, next moth we are going to fly to Great Britain, a British study is interested in making a film and they want Higgins to be the main character.

Interviewer: that’s great!  I heard that your dog is going to appear in a TV series, too

Higgins: Well, there is nothing about that really, nothing serious at least. We are pretty busy already, in September Higgins star a world tour with a famous American circus.

Interviewer: and you Terry, do you have any personal plans?

Higgins: I’m going to write a book about my experience as an animal trainer.  Hope it will help other people with their dogs.

Interviewer: that’s a great idea Terry! Thank you very much

The Dragon is sleeping away in its den, dreaming of fire and wealth, the servants of the galactic empire are hidden, planning to conquer power, and in some distant future, a group of hackers are trying to break into the massive computer system that controls a world of glass and stainless steel.

Everything is different, everything is the same. Welcome to the fantasy genre

All the situations described above share a common feature: they are set in fictional, fantastic places. However, these places reflect a part of the world we live in. In all of them there is a conflict of good vs evil. Through fantasy, we reflect our fears and hopes for the future.

In the present day, we are living a massive success of fantasy. Movies like Lord of Rings, novels like the Harry Potter series, and videogames like Skyrim and World of Warcraft are making fantasy trendy again

In this unit, we use fantasy as a way to improve our storytelling and creative skills; many years ago, there was no television; family and friends gathered together to share stories. People spent time together, enjoyed each other company, and wondered themselves with tales. In this unit, we’re travelling back in time to know how they felt then.
